While sitting in the air-conditioned comfort of our Chinese Café, the first thing I did was look up "lane closure" on the Foothill Freeway (i.e., I-210). The first link said there was going to be road work during the time we were traveling, but that didn't explain all the fire trucks we saw, or the many people dressed in yellow scurrying up and around on the hills, poking under the brush with long sticks. The second search turned up the tale - a brush fire the day before! Just think - if we'd been about 21 hours earlier, we might have had much worse luck than simply having to slow to a crawl! We were thankful to have an explanation, and to realize how lucky we had been.
